CruzHacks 2020 to be held at Stevenson Event Center January 17 to 19

Applications now open for hackers, mentors, judges, and volunteers

CruzHacks 2020, the annual student-run hackathon at UC Santa Cruz, will be held at the Stevenson Event Center from January 17 to 19.

With a new slate of student leaders at the helm, CruzHacks aims to bring together 600 hackers of all backgrounds for a weekend of innovation. The non-profit hackathon strives to create an environment in which high school and college students can work collaboratively to harness their talents and make their visions for social change a reality. While most hackathons cater to a narrowly focused tech community, CruzHacks endeavors to create engagement and value for Santa Cruz as a whole.

Applications are now open for hackers, mentors, judges, and volunteers. Visit cruzhacks.com for information and to apply. Applications will close on December 10th, 2019.

The hacker application requires a student to fill out personal information as well as a questionnaire to gauge if their values align with the hackathon’s mission. The organizers note that creating a hackathon for all requires everyone involved to be committed to a vision of inclusion.

Faculty members are encouraged to apply as mentors and judges. The participation of faculty members helps to engage the UCSC community and offers hackers access to a vast reserve of expertise and teaching ability. Mentor and judge positions are not limited to faculty members, however. Those with knowledge and passion for helping others in a hackathon setting are always needed.
